I saw an image of this place years back, and always wanted to attempt the hike. After some research, I planned a trip around this location. The hike itself requires a permit from Zion National Park, they also warn you that it’s a fairly demanding hike A top down route requires knowledge of rope repelling, and associated equipment. I did the bottom up hike. It’s not technically challenging, but since there are no trails, you have to find your own path along the river.
I set off on the hike just after sunrise. After a 3 hour hike, I made it! I met 3 other photographers the day before, and ended up catching up with them during the hike in. Thanks for keeping me company Dave, Richard, and Scott!
The sounds of pounding water was deafening in the subway, and the scene is incredible. Do bring a polarizer though (I recently upgraded to Singh-Ray, it’s an awesome polarizer). Otherwise all you’ll get is reflections in the water.
